If you are taking a trip far from home and can’t bring along your trusty canine, you may need to board them with a facility that offers kennel services in Pennsylvania. It can be stressful to leave your pets at home, both for you and them, but choosing a great kennel can make things a lot less worrying. Part of selecting the right location comes from asking the right questions. We have a few that can guide you through that conversation before your trip.

How Are the Animals Housed?

If both cats and dogs are kept at the kennel, they should be separated from seeing or hearing each other. You also want the area to have plenty of ventilation and room for your pet to move around in. You can easily see how much the pet’s comfort is taken into consideration by viewing the boarding space for your pet.

How Often Are Dogs Taken Out?

You want to be sure that your pet is let out a minimum of three times a day, although five is even better. You should also inquire about how long the dogs are allowed outside each time. Ask whether the dogs are taken out on a leash or allowed to go into an outside pen. If the latter, find out if an employee is with them the entire duration.

What Vaccinations Are Needed?

In most cases, kennel services in Pennsylvania will require your pet to be vaccinated. This is a good thing for other pets, as well as your own. For a dog, you should expect the kennel require, at a minimum, vaccinations for rabies, canine distemper, canine parvovirus, and infectious hepatitis. If no vaccinations are required, be wary about choosing that kennel.

What Extra Services Are Available?

There are many kennels that offer additional services for a fee. These services may include nail trimming, brushing, training, washing, or even extra time to play. If the kennel has vet services, they may offer minor procedures and vaccinations, as well. Play groups are another option that some facilities offer that your dog may appreciate.

It’s important to tour the kennel before deciding to leave you pet. This gives you time to notice any red flags, such as a bed smell, small pens, or insufficient shelter from the sun.
