We love our dogs, and as you’ve probably already become quite aware of, they quickly become a regular part of the family. You want to provide your dog with all of the best, and this means taking quick action when your canine becomes sick. There are a number of ailments that can affect your dog, and when you are aware of these illnesses you can be certain that the situation is appropriately handled in a timely manner.

Common Dog Conditions

Take a look at these common conditions that can affect your dog. If you take your dog to the veterinary hospital on a regular basis you can prevent most of these illnesses.

Heartworm: Heartworm is a very dangerous condition that can lead to death of your pet. It is transmitted from mosquitos, and affects the dog’s heart and lungs. There are signs of heartworm, though these signs may come too late for the best treatment. Use a heartworm prevention medication (available at your animal hospital) and this can be one worry less.

Parvovirus: Parvo is one of the most common diseases in dogs. It is also deadly. In most cases parvo is caused by unsanitary conditions for the pet. Parvo is highly contagious and can escalate quickly. Signs of Parvovirus in your dog include lethargy, refusing to eat or drink anything, vomiting, bloody stools, increased amount of sleep, and diarrhea.

Obesity: Studies show that older dogs are at a greater risk of becoming overweight or obese.  Carrying around extra weight affects your dog in many ways, including creating extra work for his or her heart and lungs. Ask the veterinary hospital staff how to properly feed your dog.
Allergies: Dogs are also susceptible to allergies, including those caused by fleas. Signs of allergies include sneezing, runny nose and watery eyes. There are over the counter treatments that you can purchase if your pet has allergies. But if you’re not sure what’s wrong, take your furry friend to the veterinary hospital where the vet can perform a series of tests and make a medication recommendation.

Canine Bloat: Canine Bloat is an extremely serious condition that is life-threatening. It is a must that your dog be taken to the veterinary hospital as quickly as possible if you suspect bloat. This condition causes your dog’s intestines to swell. Signs of Canine Bloat include swelling of the abdominal area, panting and heavy breathing, whining, vomiting and excessive saliva.

All Creatures Hospital is a top veterinary hospital that cares about your dog. They can help you with any illness, injury, or condition that can affect your four-legged friend. Even if you don’t know what’s wrong, the veterinarians at All Creatures Hospital will be able to help.
