Over time, culture and humans have evolved. One of the changes that has occurred that you may not think about relates to your teeth. Humans used to utilize their wisdom teeth. Today, they are not as necessary. For many, their best option is to get their wisdom teeth removed in Glenview.

Here are three wisdom teeth facts.

Growth

Wisdom teeth sprout last, usually when a person is 17 - 25 years old. Once they break through the gums, they may not extend far above the gum like the rest of your teeth. The longer the wisdom teeth are left alone, the longer root they may grow. This root may attach itself to your jaw bone.

Impacted Teeth

Everyone's jaw size is a little different from the next. Our current jaw is smaller than the jaws of our ancestors. Since jaws are smaller, there is less room for all teeth, especially the wisdom teeth. If your teeth are already crowded, the wisdom teeth could cause problems. When these teeth are impacted, they bump up against your molars. If left untreated, it could cause tooth decay, pain and alignment issues. If you are still in your 20s, simple surgery can take care of what is happening. The longer you wait, however, the more intricate treatment and surgery can become.

Removal

Of those who sprout at least one wisdom tooth, 85% should have all four of them removed. Your dentist, through a visual and x-ray examination, will determine how much work it will take to extract them. In some cases, after a consultation, the dentist may determine it is best to leave them alone.

Today, wisdom teeth are not as necessary as they were in the past. A dentist, like those at  Family Smiles at the Glen, can help you determine the health of your wisdom teeth.
